Kids fearing their parents?

I noticed that there are some parents who brag about making their kids fear them and love the idea that if they even give a certain look that their kids will rattle in their boots and do whatever they want.My parents had that mindset and at 27 I still cannot understand why some parents have that mindset or the benefit of it?
