Why do people prefer Facebook instead of real life when they zany to congratulate someone???

Why is it that people love it so much to congratulate people on a new baby on !#@ Facebook before the parents even announced it themselves!! That is so inappropriate!!! Is the purpose really to congratulate them or do you just want to brag about you knowing stuff before the others!?
