6 year old has already given up

My six year old son has been having difficulties in class ever since he was in preschool. He doesn't have a learning disability, that was the first thing we tested for. He can read and write at a completely normal 1st grade level. He doesn't have difficulties socializing with the teacher or his classmates either. He just refuses to do any homework or school work. This is something that I thought I might have to deal with when he was a teenager. Not already! They recommended giving him pills to concentrate because they thought he had ADD. I hate to give children unnecessary medication but if they thought it would help I would. It had no effect on his behavior even when they upped the dosage twice. So we stopped the medication and he has still stayed the same. Which leads me to believe he has nothing wrong with him, he just thinks school is bullshit and has given up on it. Me and my husband have had many talks with him about the importance of school and how it impacts your life. They have had no effect. He enjoys going swimming and gymnastics with his friends so when he failed a test we told him he couldn't go until he got his grades up. He completely brushed it off, didn't care that he didn't go, and the teacher probably just gave him a C out of frustration at the end. We have tried everything short of physical violence which I am not going to take part in. And we are desperate to find something to motivate him. Has anyone been in a similar situation and can offer some help? via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2m6Jsvf
