What made you decide to seek an ADHD diagnosis?

My daughter (6) is gifted and gifted kids can be misdiagnosed with ADHD, but also gifted kids can have ADHD missed. Last year, she kept getting into trouble for talking, but I decided to wait it out and see what this year would be like in an all-gifted class. We are two weeks into the new year and the talking is still an issue. Her teacher has said she can no longer wear a certain shirt with sequins because it is a distraction. Her work does get done and she is doing well enough academically. She is also now on a gymnastics team and in watching the practices, it is so very clear to me how distracted she gets, especially when compared to the other little girls in her team. She is making faces in the mirror while waiting on others, jumping up and down in line, not waiting patiently like the rest of her teammate and as always, chatterboxing away. Her coach has known her for three years and has ADHD herself and has noticed her behavior. At home, she is also very fidgety and active (for example, her feet are always fidgety when we read), talks all the time and it's hard for her to follow directions right away.My worries are that 1) if I wait and this is something she can't help and she does have ADHD that she is getting messages that she is "bad" or will learn to dislike school or 2) I'm jumping the gun and she may be put on medication that changes who she is and she's just an active little girl who needs to work on her behavior.So... how did you finally decide to take that step? via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2vhXYDQ
