4.5 year old suddenly can't/won't go to sleep without either me or my wife sitting with her.

This often takes several hours eating into the only time my wife and I have alone as we also have a 2 year old who is fairly high-maintanance right now. This becomes a huge battle if we try to get her to fall asleep without one of us spending half the evening sitting with her, she gets hysterical.
