My 8 month old started choking yesterday and I had no clue what to do

I happened when he was eating the soft part of broccoli. He's ate broccoli before but this time he got part of the step caught in his throat. He started choking and not breathing, and I wasn't sure to do the Heimlich or not, I'm not even sure what the Heimlich is. Thank god he spit it up after a few seconds, but it seemed like forever. He is my only child so far, but I feel so unprepared after what happened. I realized I don't have a clue what to do in those situations.
