Is it ok to leave a 1-year old in a baby-safe room while the parent sleeps?

There is a debate in our house. This is the scenario that keeps repeating itself:One parent has been offering to watch/take the baby, and then falling asleep. The baby (toddler?) can walk and run, climb steps, open and close doors. The room is “baby-safe” as much as possible, but there is a coffee table and a few narrow spaces (between heavy furniture items) that the baby can get stuck. This parent is also a heavy sleeper and does not usually wake up to cries and/or screaming. The baby is curious and adventurous and has done things like bring a chair cushion over to the coffee table, try to stand on it to get a better vantage point, slip, and slam his little face into the table edge. So far, the baby has never been hurt or close to hurt when this parent has been asleep; however, the other parent has had to respond to the baby’s cries multiple times when the responsible party fell asleep and the baby has been found with things he is not supposed to have (like eyeglasses) while the responsible party was asleep. This parent falls asleep while watching the baby at least once a week. This parents gets 7-8 hours of sleep every night but tends to drift off if this parent lies down. This parent has a strong habit of lying down while watching the baby. Both parents argued, and the above parent argued that the baby is in a safe room and developmentally old enough to not require constant monitoring. The other parent agrees that the baby can be left in another room while the caretaker is, say, in the next room cooking and within earshot, but that sleeping is dangerous and negligent. This is looking to be a marriage-ending fight, so help/advice is appreciated (though it will be taken with a massive grain of salt). via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2KIA5cx
