My ex wife is putting too much pressure on my 8yo son’s school performance

My ex and I have an 8 yo son who we co-parent.For a while now we’ve noticed him being overly hard on himself when he makes mistakes, negative self talk and perfectionism. It’s actually gotten to the point where he’s needing to see a child therapist to help with this because it makes him miserable. To support him outside of those sessions, I work through a growth mindset workbook with him and generally try to help him not take things so seriously.I know his mum is supportive of this but I find that she still places too much emphasis on results. He scored 80% on a test on things that he’d not yet been taught - but his mum wasn’t happy with that. In “her world” 80% isn’t a score to be proud of.At his recent parents evening, he got a glowing report but teacher said he needs to work on his handwriting. So rather than let him celebrate with a few mins playing video games, he has to write a ha d written essay on why he should be allowed to play on his Nintendo. He lives with his mum most of the time and I worry about how I can protect him and best support him. His mum has narcissistic tendencies so it’s not always easy to have a balanced, objective conversation with her.If you have any ideas on how I can better help him, I’d love to hear. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2IW0bKb
