When did you let your child walk home from school alone?

My son is 8 years old in 3rd grade. My husband and son both want him to walk home by himself. We live 3-4 blocks away from the school but there is a corner where it isn't a place we can watch the whole way. I dont know if I'm being over protective by not wanting him to walk by himself or it's a bad idea.
