Austistic kid abused at boarding school

So this isn't one of my kids, this is my sisters son. He is 18 and autistic, mostly non verbal. I don't know all the technical terms but he's pretty low on the functionality scale. After years of struggling with feeling like they are abandoning him and then struggling to find a facility that can help him, they placed him in a boarding school last year.I just got this email from my sis and I am so pissed off right now. I've changed the names and removed any specifics. I'm wondering if any parents have experienced similar and can offer advice I can relate to my sister. Don't know what to do or if there is anything I can do to help.Email says it all:I picked Tom up on Wednesday to bring him home for a Neurology appointment at local doctor. When we got home were getting him ready for bed, we noticed serious bruising on his knees. On Thursday morning when I was bathing him it became clear that these bruises were not confined to his knees. He has bruising all over his body. There are hand prints on him, his right foot is very bruised on top, and a line that appears to be from a long blunt object. There are a handful of other bruises beyond that. Tom was not complaining of anything hurting, but says “ouch, no Name Of Boarding School" when we point to them.We had an appointment with Regional Planning yesterday afternoon already planned. Before the meeting we made contact with his primary physician and also our local school district. When Regional planning came they decided that this was a very serious situation. DCFS was contacted imediatly. We are working with State Children’s Services, and adjacent State is going to collaborate with them on the case. Pictures have been sent to them and they have already been in contact with Boarding School. We are waiting to see what their findings are because we have not received any incident reports. On Thursday January 17th Tom was also involved in an incident where he was attacked by a resident. The school initially told us that Tom was unharmed and that there was a staff member there who immediately stopped the aggressor. After Local Schools and ourselves asked for an incident report, a week went by with no response to that request. So I made a phone call to Boarding School to see what was going on. I was told that they didn’t need to give us a report because Tom was not the aggressor. I told them I was not getting off of the phone without an explanation of the events that took place. The supervisor proceeded to look through her notes and then said she was going to have to call me back. She called back 15 minutes later to tell me that we had been given the wrong information. Of course the woman telling me this was the person who gave us the information on the 17th.She continued to tell me that Tom had actually been left alone by staff when they went into the back room. When they left Tom had been sitting on the couch watching Scooby Doo. They described looking out the window of the room to see Tom on the ground being strangled and bitten by an older student. When they finally got to them and removed the aggressor Tom was in bad shape. He had been strangled, bitten on his shoulder (badly), had his shirt ripped off of him, scratches on his chest-back-and neck, and both of his glasses lenses popped out of his “unbreakable” glasses. Of course we spent the next week in many discussions with many people to make sure that this would never happen again! We also made it clear that we are to be notified with the “correct” information is a quick and timely manner. There have been problems over the last 3 months that I can’t even go into because it would take too long. So in the mean time we are homebound with Tom until there are any developments. Tom has been turned away by many schools, so we are just trying to keep our heads up and pray for the best situation to open up for Tom.Husband will be heading to Boarding School after work on Saturday with a Police escort to retrieve Tom’s belongings. The State Board of Education has already removed Boarding School from their list of Schools they will fund. It might take a couple of days for it to officially disappear from the website. The head of Special Education, says they are taking this very seriously. So that's the deal, thanks for reading and any advice I could give to my sister. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2NDvF8U
