5 year old son's surprise space themed birthday party

Several months ago, my son asked if he could have a surprise birthday party. Knowing that he wouldn't know exactly WHEN the surprise would come, I said of course! I decided to go with a space themed party, and I've been planning it for months. As a divorced dad, this is the first BIG party I've thrown for my son since the divorce. As a result, as stupid as I know it is, I can't help but feeling this party is "proving" my value as a dad to my circle of friends. His stepmom is very excited about it also, and she's helped a lot in terms of getting things ready, but this has consumed me over the past couple of weeks. I get my son from his mother later today, and tomorrow morning he will go with my dad and stepmom to breakfast while I travel to a nearby town to pickup the galaxy themed cake from my best friend's girlfriend's bakery. I also ordered paper lanterns of differing sizes and colors to correspond to planets of the solar system and will be hanging them from my living room ceiling while he's at breakfast in the morning, along with a flurry of other space themed decorations, galaxy backdrop and space photo props, and some pretty cool space snacks. We're also doing tie dye with all the kids who are attending, painting space rocks, and other games.I'm so excited, yet nervous. I know he'll have fun regardless, but I feel like 5 years old is the first birthday he may stand a better chance of remembering for the rest of his life, I just want it to be special for him. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2qITMvr
