13 month old - mystery illness - extreme lethargy & breathing issues

Two days ago, my 13 month old son became extremely lethargic at about 5pm for no reason (very unlike him) and we could not even keep him awake. Around the same time he began having trouble breathing. This progressed to the point where his breathing basically stopped apart from a loud gasp for air followed by seconds of silence until his body got low on oxygen again and he had to gasp again. We took him to the ER and they could not figure out what was wrong. After about 5 hours and lots of tests, they shipped us 2 hours by ambulance to a children's hospital. At 7:30 AM the next morning, his breathing was normal again and by noon he was his normal happy self. The doctors released us by 5pm (24 hours after the onset) and we went home.We had many blood tests done, urinalysis, x-ray, cat scan. They even tried a lumbar puncture (but didn't get anything). All tests came back normal - no drugs, no toxins, nothing. We are left not having any idea what happened.Have any of you ever seen anything like this? I hate not knowing what caused this. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2gWPcls
