Is it a real thing that parents suck the mucus from an infants nose?

My (M25) less than one month old boy has developed a head cold, possibly picked up from our other child (F2). My Fiance (F25) was told by her friend that if it gets bad enough you can suck the mucus from their nose to clear the airways. At her appointment today she asked the midwife whether she'd heard of this happening before, and her response was as if it was a common knowledge sort of thing?
