The squeaky wheel gets the oil.. school finally listened to me about my daughter.

My daughter is five. And in those 5 years she has been to hell and back. She's had 2 open heart surgeries as a young baby and will need another in a few years. She has a history of food and weight issues, and was tube fed for her first 3 years... And she has low muscle tone and a diagnosed developmental delay. This is amongst a tonne of other issues. She was -meant- to catch up by age 2-3. She didn't. Which brings us on to her school. She started in 2017. She wasn't making any progress and stayed at the same point she was at in pre school. School refused to do anything, even though her pre school had told them she needs extra support.Every meeting I made 2017-mid 2018 was refused or cancelled by her teacher, and all my daughter's educational issues were put on me. Apparently she wasn't attending school enough and that was apparently my fault, and I was told I needed to boost her attendance. I would understand their concerns.Except it was just schools way of copping out because all her absences were medical. I almost broke in 2017 because every medical professional was telling me my daughter needed support in school, and the system dictates school should be making referrals for children. But they were adamant my daughter didn't need any help.Forward to September 2018... the new academic year. I made school see me on the second week of term, to discuss a way forward. They promised to observe.. and never observed. They shoved my daughter in a special needs class without actually assessing her needs or discussing it with me.When her behaviour declined it was my fault. When she made no progress it was my fault. I had meeting after meeting to be told all her issues were stubbornness and early years trauma. I was certain it wasn't. So around Christmas time I started looking around new schools, and told her school that they weren't meeting her needs, and as a result I would most likely transfer my daughter to a new school after Easter and put in complaints so other parents don't have to go through this. At this point every professional except school had acknowledged my daughter had something going on.We made major progress last week. School pulled me into the office, and I was told they had FINALLY done some forms of observation and assessment on my daughter. And we are definitely looking at a "specific learning disability". Diagnoses won't happen for a while yet, but support has been put in place and we're finally getting somewhere. It's a shame it took 1.5 years of fighting, but I'm confident my daughter will get the help she needs now.If you're ever facing a battle for your child, don't stop fighting. Remember you are their voice. And eventually someone will get sick of you nagging and do what's needed. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2tS2Axm
