Children's birthday party ideas?

So I made the mistake of throwing both my kids big birthday parties last year. They weren't expensive, just lots of balloons and party food in the local village hall. This year, however, they're very much looking forward to their birthday parties, which I really couldn't afford to have as big. I think they're old enough now that they need more than just room to run around in, although the hall doesn't fit a bouncy castle and I'd probably not be able to afford an entertainer. Any ideas?
