My twelve year old failed the state test in math last year, and so far this year has only gotten correct answers on work she's done with an adult sitting next to her helping. When I asked her if she could sum up what they've learned so far this year, she just gave me a blank look. We've tried math tutors. I've worked with her. We got a massive amount of educational testing which told us that she's bright, that she has great reading comprehension, and that there's no learning disability that would keep her from doing math - she just gets anxious when she tries to do it, and doesn't really care whether she learns it or not.Today I told her (for the millionth time) that we're worried she won't be able to get into a decent high school or college if she doesn't step up her game, and she said, "that's okay, even if I go to school later, like [friend in her 40s who worked as a massage therapist for years and is now back in school working on her bachelor's degree], it'll be okay. I mean, I won't die." She just can't be convinced to care, unless we push really hard, telling her that we're worried about her being able to have a decent life, at which point she'll have a massive meltdown, crying and hitting herself, and saying she's useless and wants to die.Part of me wants to just say, okay, apparently you're the kind of person who is going to fail math and go to community college, and I don't know, go work at the Renaissance Faire or something. But I really think she could do better! Has any one out there had a kid like this who pulled it together and had a decent life? Is there anything I should be doing that I haven't thought of?
