Fussy newborn baby refuses to sleep at night- must be constantly held

Hi Parents!My newborn baby is five days old and I feel like I'm losing my mind from sleep deprivation. He will not sleep at night and is extremely fussy. Whenever I try to put him down in the bassinet at nighttime, he will start screaming a couple minutes later, demanding to be held. Out of desperation I've tried having him sleep on his bassinet mattress in my bed but he just stirs and cries, sometimes even if I'm right there and comforting him. I've tried white noise, swaddling, and am looking into getting a rock and play (I'm somewhat skeptical though...) Has anybody else gone through this? Any recommendations are welcome!
