Speech Delays Questions

My first son (5 week premie) had speech delay. I brought it up many times to our pediatrician that he wasn’t talking by 2 except one word items and even then rarely. He was evaluated by a specialist who deemed he “knew words but wasn’t ready to speak them yet”. Fast forward to age 3 and still not talking so we took him to speech lessons - which is now taken over by the school and he is still currently in at 8 years old. I feel bad because if we had gotten early interventions like I believed he needed he could have possibly avoided speech lessons for 5 years. But he’s doing great with speech lessons. He is on the spectrum (diagnosed at age 4) too so maybe it was all related.Son #2 - currently 8 months (but only 6 months adjusted since premie again - preeclampsia sucks). Our son recently just started rolling, he’s crawling backwards, etc. I think motor skills are fine he’s doing great for his age. But talking is where I’m concerned again. He obviously hears us (he turns when we clap or talk to him, is startled by loud sounds, etc). But he isn’t making “mmm” sounds, or “d” sounds. He occasionally makes “ooo” sounds and the “uuuggg” sounds when wanting to be picked up. But I’m seeing no progress made in terms of speaking. He’s been making the same sounds since about 4 months old. His 9 month old appointment is coming up in a few weeks and I don’t want to get brushed off again. Is there even anything they can do at this age? I don’t want to wait until 3 again for any intervention. I know he’s already at increased risk here for being a boy and being a premie. Do speech therapists even start this early? Or is too soon to even consider something? via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2yEGccy
