He threw away his pancakes....oh, my heart

My son took his lunch to school every day last year in kindergarten. This year he said he wanted to have the option to do hot lunch with some of his friends sometimes, so we said we'd load some money onto his account. We talked about how we'd look at the school lunch calendar so he could decide which days to take lunch and which days to have hot lunch. So it takes me a few weeks to get around to loading up his account with some money. Yesterday I mention to him that it's loaded up now.... but I mention it in passing during breakfast, and his lunch is already packed, so he takes his lunch, we think nothing of it.At lunch he gets to the cafeteria and it's pancakes-for-lunch day. This kid LOVES pancakes. And eating them for lunch?? What fun right? He's psyched so he gets in line and gets a hot lunch of pancakes. He gets back to his table and realizes that he has his lunch from home, too. And his little sweet 6 year old brain realizes he's only supposed to get hot lunch on days he doesn't bring his lunch...and he gets worried that we're going to get mad at him for having two lunches....so he gets up and THROWS AWAY his pancake lunch. :( :( :(He 'confeses' to his dad on their walk home after school about what happened. My husband of course isn't mad, he's just like oh kiddo, it's ok, once you buy a lunch it's ok to eat it, you can always save your cold lunch for dinner, or the next day etc. And of course my son is like oh yeah....I didn't think of that. But he's relieved he's not in trouble. (Side note - he's like NEVER in trouble with us for small stuff.... he's a great kid and we're not crazy strict or mean parents or anything, I don't know why he thought we were going to be angry!)But oh, my heart.....the image of him getting up from that table and throwing away those pancakes, after being so excited to have his first hot lunch and have it be something so fun and delicious -- it seriously makes me tear up every time I think of it!!We'll do a better job coordinating the lunch plans now. But dammit, we're having pancakes for dinner tonight and that kid is getting a pile of them. <3 via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2hOxfJ7
