5 year old acting out all week, kicks principal

I'm open to suggestions. I'm going to a meeting with his teachers/principal tomorrow to deal with it, but the short version in earlier last week he had 2 rough days, and he had another one today. This includes hitting, kicking, screaming and throwing in class. Today, he was ejected from the after school program and apparently kicked the principalI feel he may be acting out in part because I'm not always there for him; my work schedule is 2 weeks day shift, two weeks afternoons. I just finished afternoon shift(where he spends almost entirely with one of his two grandparents), but work tacked on mandatory overtime on day shift, making it impossible for me to drop him off prior to the before school program so....yea....back to one of his two grandparents.Equally, it MAY have something to do with his mother. If it wasn't obvious, I'm a single parent, and his mother is just awful. Long story short, she made an effort to make her home safe, and stopped living with a drug dealer, so, after a 6 month period where she didn't make any effort to see her son beyond a phonecall on his birthday, he spent the night at her house- and the following week was when he started acting out.Either way, with that details out of the way, he's grounded from tv, video games, has been sent to bed early tonight without dinner, and isn't allowed to have any toys this evening. I've had several talks, and some shouting matches earlier on, over what he did wrong, as well as talking about what improvements would help him feel more.comfortable in school, but I'm just at a loss. This needs to be addressed, now, ASAP. So I need some advice/some appropriate punishment via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2xbuFit
