Talking to a nine-year-old about mental health issues with a parent

My ex and I are great friends still.He is checking into an outpatient, mental health program on Tuesday. Depression. He is diagnosed bipolar.He's staying with his gf (of about 2 months) this weekend so as not to be alone (lives in an apt by himself), on a semi suicide watch. Weekends are usually spent with our 9 yr old.I could really use some help figuring out what to say to her.
