We canceled Easter and my kids didn't mind!

I grew up secular; only going to church on Christmas and Easter, while my husband was raised in a semi-conservative Christian household. My mom has always pushed to celebrate big on holidays. She always had elaborate Easter baskets all full of candy we never finished and goodies we rarely played with. As an adult, my husband has distanced himself from religion and as an adult, and I'm trying to distance myself from my mom's "traditions for the sake of tradition" and my mom in general (for a number of TL;DR reasons). My husband and I decided to ditch Easter this year. I recognize it solely as a religious holiday, so it feels wrong for us to celebrate "because tradition." We do Christmas small now, so Easter as a gift-giving holiday didn't feel right either. Combined with our efforts to keep our kids healthier than we were growing up (my husband was always rewarded with snacks and candy and resents his time as a "fat kid"), nothing about Easter fits our family vibe.We packed up the car and drove down to San Diego for the weekend! My kids (10 & 8) had a blast and didn't ask about baskets, eggs, or ham! My little one still believes in Santa but didn't question why the Easter Bunny didn't visit. We walked around different historical locations, let the boys order whatever the wanted at restaurants, and enjoyed the time as a little family unit. I'm excited to make traveling our new Easter tradition! via /r/Parenting http://bit.ly/2VmNzD2
