My step daughter is in first grade. She is still working on basic phonics, which seems to me a bit behind. Sight words are not there, sounding words out is a garble I’d mildly accurate sounds that don’t compute to an actual word. When I work with her and push her to repeat or keep trying til she understands, the next time we hit that word it’s gone. There’s no retention.I do my best not to get frustrated but sometimes it’s literally like the word ‘the’ happens every 5 words, what’s not connecting? Or I literally just told you what that word was 5 seconds ago. I can’t tell if she isn’t listening or if she just doesn’t get it or...I just don’t know. After a few tries she starts to shut down and just says she doesn’t know. She won’t try because I’m supposed to help her aka tell her the answer.I think she gets embarrassed she doesn’t know, so how do we get past this? I try to say ‘well that’s why we are practicing.’I try to ask her to read things out and about and she immediately gets upset and says she doesn’t know - doesn’t even try. We do lesson books, we read first reader books. Nothing seems to be sinking in.Do I just let her stop after 5 minutes when she quits? Do I force her to keep going which can turn into a more stressful situation? What’s has worked for you and your kids to get over this learning hump? via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2NOy8zP
