How common is screen time in Elementary school? Do your kids watch cartoons during the day at school?

My son just started Kindergarten and one morning when I dropped him off late, all the kids were sitting on the floor watching a cartoon. He told me the name of it and I watched an episode on YouTube with him. It's just a silly cartoon about a penguin, so nothing educational. He says they watch it every day. He only goes half a day. When I picked him up today, the class next to his was watching Peppa Pig.They have a smart board in each classroom and they end up watching music videos and other clips of stuff during circle time as well (which isn't a big deal, but I think the smart board makes it easy for the teacher to put on a cartoon so the kids will sit still).Is this something that's common nowadays since screen time is more accessible? When I was a kid, they would have to wheel the huge tv into the room so we didn't watch much - maybe a documentary twice a year. To keep us quiet, we would play Heads Up 7up or Hangman on chalkboard.
