How do I deal with a 7-year-old's tantrums?

Recently I went away for a trip to help my sister. I left my son with my mother, and call every day to check in on him. When I came back, he became a spoiled turd. I feel bad for saying that, but he has been throwing things or hitting whenever he is upset. I have spoken to him about accepting feelings, but expressing them in a different manner.
