Someone who was like a son

A little backstory... My daughter dated a guy for 2 1/2 years. He was at our house more than his own. He doesnt know who his dad is and he has a strained relationship with his mother so while he was dating my daughter my wife and I slowly became his parental figures. He would come to us for advise on everything. He and I would have guy day and go to a baseball game or just hang out...like father and son. It was like a little family...him, my daughter, my wife, and I. But then, earlier this year, he and my daughter had a falling out and their relationship ended. My wife and I were heartbroken for both of them. For my daughter because she thought for sure they'd be together forever, and for him because he had to go back to a life he was not happy with.They have been broken up for over 3 months now and I still worry about him. He was like the son I never had. All contact between us has stopped...his decision. My daughter has moved on, has a new boyfriend and just finished her first year of college.
