How can I help my 2nd grader build some stamina in reading? She's a great decoder, she can read aloud easily and comprehend text without a problem, even things above grade level. But she flags out quick, and she is very resistant to reading a chapter book. She wants it read to her, or wants to just read picture books. I'm trying not to push, but I'm getting a little frustrated. I want her to enjoy reading, and she is...but I also want her to challenge herself more, and I think she would enjoy accessing some more complex stories - she likes to write, she likes deep emotional stories and those are out there but she doesn't want to move to those books. We do read aloud to her, she likes that a lot. And we read lots of comics and graphic novels, she likes those, but those too can be text heavy and she still tires out quick. My main concern for my child is that she feel confident in her reading ability, and that she know she can access any info she wants. Her sister is a year younger and very independent, she wants to read on her own because she highly values access and wants to act big, for example, if I leave a book around she'll always try to read my novel and see if there's grown up stuff in there. My second grader on the other hand highly values assistance and support - she tries to stay younger in a lot of senses and it's very sweet of her, I don't want her to rush to grow up, but I do think she's deliberately holding herself back in reading material. So I'm torn, should I just back off entirely and let her find her own way? Should I support her more and read more together? Should I make sure we have structured independent reading time at home? I love reading, but I have no recollection of anything specific my parents did to help me enjoy it or how I actually got good at it. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2pIQXrt
