My sisters first easter in 5 years

First off i want to say that i know im not technically a "parent" but i have recently gotten custody of my two sisters (11) (16) and i am technically the legal guardian at the moment.I moved out 5 years ago for a multitude of reasons (abuse, ptsd, depression, and a toxic environment) just to name a few. We celebrated Easter this morning with my fiance and her parents and this situation just strengthened my resolve for getting them out of our parents care. This is the conversation that ensued after my sisters woke up to two gift baskets and some eggsS16: whats all this?Me: what do you mean "whats all this", its easterS16: we haven't celebrated easter or Christmas since you left Mike (my first name)S11: yeah, mother and father always said that holidays were for the religious and superstitious crazys.Me: well im neither religious or crazy and ive always celebrated, what happened to celebrating?S16: Mike, you were always the one who set up the holidays and birthdays. I dont remember mother and father ever helping.Me: so your saying that you havent celebrated a single holiday or gotten gifts in 5 years?S16: except the gifts we've gotten from you, yeah. That's the gist of it.Me: that ends today, open your baskets. We have 5 years of easter and Christmas to make up.This surprised me that our parents never even threw them a birthday party or celebrated a holiday. I knew they were horrible people but this angered me to no end. So far the day has been great though, i got them a Nintendo switch (which they were super excited about, they LOVE pokemon and other Nintendo games) and we've had a pretty chill day otherwise. via /r/Parenting http://bit.ly/2IM5RXW
