Hamsters and young kids?

We are headed to the pet store in a couple of hours, and I wanted to ask Reddit before we made some sort of terrible mistake. We have two kids, an almost 4-year-old boy and a 10-month-old daughter. Thursday, my husband told our son that on Saturday (today) we were going to get a hamster. I was like uhhhhhh, what? But after talking to him about it some more, he assures me that it will be fine/not a lot of work/a good learning experience for our kids. But now that adoption day is here I'm having second thoughts. Will this learning experience involve the muder of a beloved family pet? Is a hamster an appropriate pet for kids this age to even handle? Will I resent this new mouth to feed? Thanks! via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2x4H0ZI
