Growing up, my family was really into scouting. My brother also has a 5 year old boy whom he just signed up for the cub scouts. He's now pressuring me to sign up my 5 year old boy for cub scouts as well so our sons can have that experience together. Honestly, I'd love for this to happen, but I'm chronically ill and scouting requires a lot of parental involvement. We don't have the kind of disposable income my brother has, and I don't have the energy to commit to weekly meetings let alone the other things they ask of parents. My son is a gregarious extrovert who has shown a lot of interest in outdoors survivalist stuff. I'm pretty sure he'd love that part of scouting. I'd love for him to have camping experiences I can't personally participate in. While I have the interest but not the ability, my husband has zero interest in outdoors and camping. Does anyone have any suggestion for alternatives to scouting to promote love for nature and general survival skills? Does anyone have positive experiences with boy scouts when parents can't participate? via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2frpqVF
