LO is 2 ¾, we started him in preschool five weeks ago. We have a baby due in August and didn’t want him to start school in September thinking the two things were linked. We want him to learn the language of the country we live in as soon as possible (we don’t speak it at home). We don’t know other kids here and want him to make friends and learn social skills. He goes to preschool attached to the village school 3 mornings a week. It’s a state school, none of the kids or teachers speak much English, but some teachers speak enough that his basic needs can be communicated. We expected challenges. But he’s a very sociable kid who’s happy to be looked after by anyone and he’s also used to change, so we weren’t expecting it to last so long. The cries every drop-off, sometimes we have full-on clinging and shouting tantrums (which he really doesn’t have about anything else). We also have minor tears in the morning before school, or when he talks about how sad he feels when we leave him at school. After school, he usually tells us that he had a lovely day, and he’s not crying during the morning. We’re ok with working through this if it’s just a stage and not doing him any harm, but we’re also ok with pulling him out until he’s ready if this could be bad for him. We’ve researched this a fair bit, and we have good morning routines, great sleep and plenty of other coping strategies in place. We’ve started playdates with some other kids in the class. We assume the language plays a huge part, but how this might this influence our decision? He has to learn the language, so if we withdraw him, are we just putting off the inevitable? For us, the question is whether to keep him in this preschool, change his schedule, or take him out for a while and start again later (maybe January?). Because we are in a country with (good) free preschool at this age, he’s not going to meet other kids his age in a private creche and we also can’t really afford it. We both work at home, so the school isn’t a necessity from a childcare perspective, it’s only important to us that he gets what he needs. So we’re looking for advice and stories of your experiences - would pulling him out just delay the same thing in the future? Is it possible he’s just not ready? Is it all fine and it’s just my hormonally-charged emotions making this out to be a big deal? via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2qL1NOh
