My husband and I are white and we're raising a black son. He's encountering some difficulties were not sure of how to help him with.

We adopted him at birth due to tragedy striking his biological family. He's the 4th of 5 children. He's 20 years old, now and he recently spoke with me and his father about how he feels ugly and "hates his skin color and other features that he attributes to him being black. He's always, since he realized he was a different color than his parents or his siblings, wanted to look like us so he could feel like he was truly a part of the family. When he was young, we'd assure him that his skin color didn't matter to us and he was our boy. His siblings rallied around him.Now that he's out in the world and struggling with dating and confidence in himself, that reassurance is less effective on him. When he spoke with us, he seemed so defeated and as if he'd already given up.How can we help our son? He's truly a beautiful person inside and out. We just wish he could see and appreciate his own beauty. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2qMzQFS
