To practice, a kid needs to enjoy what he's reading. To enjoy reading, he's got to pick the material himself. I've never met a kid who didn't enjoy reading a comic book or graphic novel. And they graduate onto heftier material in due time.And as for vocabulary, try re-reading Calvin & Hobbes sometime. Written for adults, my kids love it, and they're always asking me the meaning of words.(I'm a parent, not affiliated with this event.
