9-year-old daughter ditching 7-year-old son on the walk to school.

Our kids go to a school just up the street a bit from us. They walk to school. In the mornings, our daughter (9) has been ditching our son (7) for the walk. This has really been hurting his feelings. We talked to her about it and now they leave the house together and when they get out of our yard, she runs ahead and leaves him. What's a good way to talk to her about this?
