Pediatrician referred me to a speech therapist for my 19 month old son. Anyone have any experience with a speech therapist?

At 19 months old, my son is still not saying words. He only "oohs" and whines. He understands what I'm saying, what I point to, and knows who is mum and dad/grandpa and grandma are. He simply can't say the words. I have made an appointment to have a therapist come out 2x week per his pediatricians request.Has anyone else ever done the same?
