Step Daughter (5) said she "wanted to die." How do we follow up on this?

We had SOs daughter last weekend, and we noticed she kept talking about dying. For instance, there was a chicken out of someone's yard and we pointed it out while driving by. Her response? "Did we run it over? Is it dead? Is it flat now?" No....of course not!The next day we were watching Adele sing for George Michael on the Grammy's. She asked about it and we said he had died so she was singing for him. Pretty basic. For HOURS she kept saying "It's sad he died. I'm sorry he died." On and on and on.Those 2 moments stuck out most but there were many other comments over the weekend. The next day her mom calls my SO because SD has been a pain all day. SO asks SD what's going on. She tell him, "I want to die because my doll's hair got wet."WHAT???Obviously we need to discuss this with her. I feel like we need to find out if she really wants to die. If yes, then therapy it is! If not, we need to explain that that is not something you just say. (She can be rather attention seekingly dramatic)Has anyone had to have similar conversations with the kiddos? Is it normal for them to get a death obsession? She's coming back Friday and I'm hoping to have a plan ready with SO.Edit: She has had death explained to her before. Specifically in regards to animals, so she has some concept of death. Or at least understands it means you're not here anymore. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2lwcYpy
