18 month old asks to be changed

My 18 month old just started telling me he pooped his diaper and asks to be changed. Is that common for this age? He also messes with his diaper or takes it off sometimes when he pees in it. Has anyone started introducing potty training this young? I don't expect him to be actually potty trained for awhile or to even try training him at this point.
