I need help with my son whose tantrums are becoming more and more violent.

My son is seven years old and due to some recent changes in his life is having a very difficult weekend. He has been going throughout the house breaking things, throwing things, and hurting everyone in our family with all of his strength.I do not want to hurt him. I have been holding him down, then giving him chances to try again and it's worked fairly well but the good down sessions leave both of us red and sore and he bangs his wrists and legs and hurts himself. Is this the right thing to do? Is it better to lock him in his room?
