School lunches not meeting nutritional guidelines- update

I'm worried about posting this because I don't want it to turn into another storm of people arguing about veganism. However I did decide to give an update on the situation since it got so many comments and I also got many messages from people giving advice and support.Today I went in to the school to speak to the principal, I thought I would try to speak to her directly about it and see if she thought a doctor's note would suffice to excuse my daughter from having to bring meat and dairy. She wasn't there so I ended up speaking to the vice principal. I explained the situation and he was very responsive. He explained that the nutrition guidelines were written with a lot of ambiguous language and didn't really take into account students with very specific diet needs or allergies. I got the impression that he wasn't really a fan of the guidelines or the way they are enforced in general. He said it should be fine if I just send something that provides protein and something that provides calcium, I mentioned labelling the containers so it would be easy for my daughter's teacher to explicitly see which foods are for which "food group", which he said would be a good idea. I was also told many parents have complained about the policy and there is an upcoming parent council meeting where they will be discussing it, so I'm planning on attending that. It was nice to find out I wasn't the only parent who had a problem with the guidelines.Thank you to everyone who provided advice I really appreciate it!I won't be replying to any rude comments criticizing the choice I made to raise my daughter vegan. If you disagree with it that is fine, but I won't be arguing about it.Considering the amount of comments I got from people who thought that BREAST MILK wasn't vegan I'm assuming a fair amount of people really don't know a lot about veganism. It is completely possible to be healthy and get all of the necessary vitamins while eating vegan, even as a baby/child. Yes it is possible for a vegan diet to be unhealthy and even dangerous, but it is also possible for a "regular" non-vegan diet to be those things as well. My daughter has had pretty much every food an average five year old has, just vegan versions. Wether it be s'mores when we're camping or pizza nights, my daughter isn't restricted from eating any food a normal kid would enjoy. My husband and I choose to eat vegan, and choose to feed our kids a vegan diet as well. All of us are healthy. This is what I as a parent have chosen to do, please be respectful of that. This post is an update on a school policy I was having issues with not a post about arguing for or against veganism, but I included this because I'm surely going to get some "veganism is child abuse!!" comments no matter what. Thanks again for all the help! This is a great community! via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2m0yNiY
