Effective way to teach infant to pet a dog?

We have a 7 month old and a pitbull. They love each other. However, kiddo is still not getting the idea of opening his hand flat to pet the dog. Plus, he seems to love to grab her nose and eyes. She doesn't seem even a bit bothered, but we don't let him do that to her. I try to hold his palm open while saying nice hands and moving his palm down her flank. It's a slow go.
