When a baby is asleep, what is acceptable as far as leaving the house?

Last night the baby was put to sleep for the night and I went out and walked the dog around the block. After my wife came home from work I mentioned walking the dog already and she got all bent out of shape. I wasn't gone long and I have an app on my phone where I can watch the video from the baby's room. Did I really do a bad thing? Is there a threshold of acceptable?
