Title pretty much says it all. Got yet another phone call from school about our 5th grader son with ADHD - the teacher had found a drawing he made of Pepe the Frog with the words “Make Pepe Great Again”.To be clear: his access to the internet is extremely limited. He doesn’t have any of his own devices, and is only allowed to use the computer if another adult is in the room. However, most of his friends/bus mates have iPhones, and access the worst of what the internet had to offer. Also, to be clear: my husband and I are extremely liberal, anti-violence, anti-racism, social justice folks. We have raised our kids with conversations about how words and images can hurt, how jokes are sometimes used to make people believe things that are not okay, especially about people who are already easy targets.I’m just at a complete loss. He and best friend are obsessed with memes and taboo topics (for them, usually sex-related, but apparently it’s crossed into other territory). Last week’s phone call was about him saying dck, pssy, f*ck, etc, at recess. The week before that was using offensive language against a classmate (who is his friend - when we asked him why he did that, he insisted they were joking around). He’s always had a problem with boundaries and it’s in part due to the ADHD - he just doesn’t know how to stop. He’s also a tween boy. He’s in therapy, and his therapist says he doesn’t really talk about any of this stuff, but she will bring it up next week. The principal seems to think he is a white supremacist threat in the making, and is (understandably) very angry. I suggested he be made to create a set of memes for their Kindness Campaign coming up - the idea that he clearly understands how viral ideas spread, and he can redirect his obsession to something positive. She says if he does “something like this” again, he will be suspended.Has anyone been through this, and can offer advice? I feel like his brain is being poisoned, and I’m powerless to stop it. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/32CR1ZN
