Am I too Strict- how to navigate asking permission with food.

A little while ago was a thread on reddit asking how you can tell someone is a strict household. Something that came up quite a bit was how they'd go to friends house and notice their peers were allowed to just eat whatever and not ask permission. This caught my attention because I do have my kids ask permission. My kids range 5-12 and the basic rule is they can have fruit, veggies and bars without permission up to two each a day. After that I want them to ask. The reason I do this is because they will easily eat 6 peaches in a row, or cliff bars all day and nothing else, or if they didnt' need to ask for chips and other trips, they'd pig out. Also, if its before meal time, I want them to wait so they can eat the meal being prepared. Is this wrong? Am I setting them up for unhealthy associations with food? Is this too strict? How do you navigate having kids who are old enough to get their own food and are always hungry but also will choose junk food over healthy food to the point that it seems excessive. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/29aTG1G
