How to let my son know the world is not a horrible place

Long time lurker, first time poster. This subreddit has been invaluable for a first time dad.My son is now 18 months old, not in day care (we manage, between me, my partner and her parents), and he has always enjoyed hugging other children. The younger ones (closer to his age) usually expect their parents' permission to retribute the hugging, the older kids normally like it and react accordingly. However, we've been having a few occasions when boys (always boys) decide to be mean and push him aside. The most serious instance happened today, he fell and started crying after being pushed. It breaks my heart when this happens. He's a better person than I am and I don't want him to feel that he should stop being gentle and sweet to other children. So, any recommendations on how to show such a young child that they should continue to be gentle and kind, and that not everyone they hug will react badly? Thanks in advance. I know this topic has been addressed continuously for different ages, but felt this was something I had to get off my chest. via /r/Parenting https://ift.tt/2GsJNj5
