Our family goes on a beach vacation every year for Thanksgiving week. Daughter is 19 and a sophomore in college, son turns 18 the day we arrive and is a senior in high school. We're going to a resort in a country where the drinking age is 18 and we all have to register for packages on the resort website this week. I noticed today that both the kids put in for a drinking wristband (what color you have lets the bartender know whether your all-inclusive package includes alcohol or not). We've talked to both of them about drinking and our expectations in the past--our daughter is open about drinking at college, our son as far as we know doesn't drink--but we've never let them drink at home, I guess mostly out of respect for the law and to avoid a situation where they're tempted to bring friends over to drink. Daughter was 18 and legal to drink on this trip last year but never brought it up.I'm not opposed to letting them have a few drinks where it's legal since both are really good, responsible kids, but I also don't want to send a message that I don't care about the drinking age (esp. to the one still in high school), and I'm kind of taken aback that neither one asked permission first.
