When will my kid be old enough to play by themselves without needing to be held and comforted all the time?

My wife and I have different work schedules and I'm alone with our 7 month old on Sundays. That said, I'm usually working from home for my second job those days, or at least, I used to. These days I'm hands on with him, but I'm wondering how long it will be before he can play by himself for an hour or two without needing to be held by me - right now he sees me and fusses or cries until I pick him up.
