Timed math tests

Does your child's school do them? How often? Why are they a thing? Any teachers want to chime in?I have researched and can't find a solid reason other than "automaticity," but that comes at the cost of causing anxiety in at least 1/3 of kids. My kid is fairly bright, he just shuts down whenever there is a speed element involved in anything. He was never a kid you could motivate by trying to race him to do something and I don't see where speed should even factor into mathematics. We don't time spelling tests. What am I missing here? The only positive info on doing them comes from makers of the various testing systems. My kid's school starts them daily in fricking kindergarten and continues throughout elementary. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2oZg7BC
