Before I begin: I am not ranting against carseats or using carseats as carriers, because each parent has their own situation and some cannot wear their babies or have babies that easily wake. I am not trying to offend anyone who has done any of this out of not knowing, I am angry about the fact that more people don't seem to know and some who probably do know just don't listen. I am simply ranting and possibly PSAing against improper use of carseats as carriers.I HATE when people put their babies' carseats in the child seat of carts at the grocery store. I've seen people here and there place carseats on tables or beds or even on restaurant highchairs. Please don't. Just cause it fits in the seat of the shopping cart, or on any high surface, don't put it there. It can damage the lock system on most carseats, and it puts the seat at risk for tipping off of the cart/surface, and it can shake the baby when the cart gets bumped and leaves the kid exposed and more open in the case of accident. The AAP says at least 10,000 babies are injured each year from carseats tipping from being placed on tables, shopping carts or highchairs. Some cases may not be accurately reported, consider. How is this not a public topic, at least where I live?Next, coats. Yes, please keep your kiddos all comfy, but watch what they're wearing in carseats. While buckled in the carseat, a kid should not be wearing bulky coats or clothes. Jackets and most bodysuits are fine, but bulkier layers under the snug buckles can be restricting and could make the buckles not fit properly. In an already heated car, being strapped in with a big coat hugging an infant or toddler can overheat or suffocate him or her. Even if "nothing bad happens", just imagine how uncomfy that can be. Cover child after buckling in.In general: The harness clip should be at armpit level and no lower, as too low could injure organs and not secure him or or her properly in case of accident. The AAP says to keep your child rear-facing until 2 years or until the child is past size limit for rear-facing seats. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2oXWOGL
