[Update] He's failing 7th grade and we feel helpless. How do you motivate a kid who just doesn't care about school?

Update to this.Quick Recap: My really bright 7th grader with HFA (Asperger's) didn't give a damn about school, was on the road to failing. Expensive prep school pretty much did nothing to help.*The Update: He failed 7th grade and I couldn't be happier about it.First, I want to say a thank you to everyone who offered advice and insight on my last post, including u/charlottespider, who detailed a routine that we pretty much follow now, and u/sawyerscience, who suggested the 504. Your suggestions helped us form a plan of action. Thank you so much!So, we switched my son to public school and he is thriving. His new teachers were all on board with helping us stay on top of his assignments. They sign his homework planner every day and have been awesome when it comes to responding to emails the few times we've had issues. The assistant principal stressed to us that we have him evaluated for a 504 because, even though he is high-functioning, she thought it best the we have a safety net in place for him. In short, the school has been awesome.My (repeat) 7th grader is now an honor roll student (in the top 5% of his grade) and is now taking advanced classes. He shows me his homework planner, signed by each teacher, every day. He's beating out other kids in spelling bee competitions and is talking about wanting to learn some programming (I'm a web dev/designer; his dad is a programmer. It's in his DNA.)A recent placement test also showed he's able to do college level work in language arts and upper high school level math. That's been a huge ego boost and a bit of a salve for having to repeat the grade. It reaffirmed to him that it wasn't a lack of intelligence that held him back, just his lack of effort.While I have no doubt that we're not exactly out of the woods, it's become so much easier with a happier kid and helpful teachers. via /r/Parenting http://ift.tt/2fomzOR
