My son is 16 and he's still shy and quiet. I guess I thought he'd grow out of it, but he hasn't. He doesn't talk much at the dinner table and even when we ask him questions he gives short replies. He spends most of his time reading books in his room with the door closed. He only does stuff with his friends once in a blue moon. I don't even remember the last time he invited a friend to our house. All of his friends that he regularly talks to are male. I came into his school one day to talk to one of his teachers and I saw a girl say hi to him and hug him and he kind of stood there awkwardly. There's a girl at our church who is obviously interested in him, but he doesn't do anything. His behavior strikes me as strange. When I was his age, I had figured out how to be social (so I had a lot of friends) and I would chase every girl who showed interest in me and I had a girlfriend.
